Celebrating children’s rights through real action in the community
World Children’s Day on 20 November is a global reminder that every child has the right to survive and thrive, including the right to health: easy access to quality healthcare, preventive services, safe environments and the information they need to lead healthy lives. This awareness day calls on governments, communities, and individuals to work together to ensure that children can enjoy this fundamental right.
There was no better way for the 4P-CAN consortium to mark this important day than by joining the event Today I’m Your Sport Teacher, organised by the Junior Sport Association and Matei Basarab Secondary School in Pitești, Argeș County.
"A child’s fundamental right is the right to health – including the right to access physical activity and to be protected from health risk factors. As adults, it is our responsibility to safeguard this right. Through the 4P-CAN project and the activities in the Lerești Living Lab, we contribute meaningfully to this mission”
Dr Marius Geantă, 4P-CAN coordinator
In the context of the Today I’m Your Sport Teacher event, Marius Geantă also put his strength to the test against two-time arm-wrestling world champion Viorel Dobrin:
A strategic partnership for children’s health across Argeș
In 2024, 4P-CAN launched a strategic partnership with Junior Sport Association, the publisher of the Born for Sport magazine, to expand the Lerești Living Lab activities to other localities in Argeș County.
The impact so far:
- 4,500 students
- 12 schools
- 8 communities, including the county capital, Pitești
Students took part in practical sports demonstrations, learned about physical activity, nutrition and health and had the chance to meet and receive autographs from world, European and national champions born in Argeș.
The special edition of Born for Sport featured a dedicated article titled “Active from a Young Age, Healthy for Life. Lessons from the Lerești Health Festival for Schools and the Community”, highlighting the programmes implemented during the first two years of 4P-CAN together with students and teachers at Lerești Secondary School No. 1.
“The success of the EU Mission on Cancer within 4P-CAN relies on deep local knowledge, the smart use of existing community resources, and continuous community activation to design, scale and sustain a new people- and community-centred prevention model”
Dr Marius Geantă, 4P-CAN coordinator
At 4P-CAN, we believe that prevention starts and in childhood: in families, in schools and within communities. Together with our partners in Argeș, we are building a European reference model for community-driven primary cancer prevention.
